World Greenhouse Gas Emissions: 2000
Note:This chart has beenupdatedto reflect the most recent available data.View the update.
This chart shows the sources and activities across the global economy that produce greenhouse gas emissions. Energy use is responsible for the majority of greenhouse gases. Most activities produce greenhouse gases both directly, through on-site and transport use of fossil fuels, and indirectly from heat and electricity that comes "from the grid."
Sources & Notes
All data is for 2000. All calculations are based on CO2 equivalents, using 100-year global warming potentials from the IPCC (1996), based on a total global estimate of 41,755 MtCO2 equivalent. Land use change includes both emissions and absorptions. See Appendix 2 ofNavigating the Numbersfor detailed description of sector and end use/activity definitions, as well as data sources. Dotted lines represent flows of less than 0.1% percent of total GHG emissions.
